The flutes require a fixture that allows the end mill to twist along the spiral edge of the flutes, with a small finger tracing the helix. There are also two angles involved there as well.

If you use your shop regularly, it is very worthwhile buying or making a setup to do this. An air spindle is essential if you want to sharpen the flutes.

Most of the time I''m using the end of the cutter (the 1st 20 to 60 thouhs) and when that gets dull, I simply use the bench grinder to hand sharpen the end; grind it back put the reliefs on (without reducing the diameter). For end mills 1/2" in diameter greater, this works well.
