Following a series of mining scandals (Karnataka, Aravallis, Madhya Pradesh, Goa, etc.), the Centre in November 2010 appointed a commission of inquiry on illegal mining of iron ore and manganese, headed by former Supreme Court Justice M B Sh. The Commission submitted the first two volumes of its report — on Odisha — in July and October, 2013.
Of the two reports, one was on illegal iron ore mining across the country, and the other was on illegal mining in Goa.
